Libby
Meyer originally hails from Birmingham, Michigan. She
went to Michigan State University and after graduating with
a degree in music ended up in Chicago. Her original
plan was to stay only a short time, but she wound up living
there for almost 11 years. By some stroke of luck (or
maybe it was divine intervention) she was granted a Doctorate
in Music Composition from Northwestern University in 1999
(which is why it took her so long to get out of Chicago, but
that's another story). It was in Chicago that she discovered
kayaking, and next to playing the viola and composing music,
it's her favorite thing to do. "It occured to me that
I was four blocks away from a really big body of water, and
I should probably do something with it other than stare at
it." Libby has been kayaking for four years and is certified
by the British Canoe Union (BCU). She has also received
training through the American Canoe Association (ACA).
Libby has been coming
to the Copper Country for the past five years and was the
Artist-In-Residence at Isle Royale National Park in 1999.
This past October she finally decided to move to Houghton
since she was spending all her free time there anyway.
Before joining Keweenaw Adventure Company she worked as a
kayak instructor with the Northwest Passage in Wilmette, Illinois.
In her non-kayaking life she taeaches violin and viola for
the Copper Country Suzuki Association in Houghton and is principal
violist with the Keweenaw Symphony Orchestra. Her other
interests include distance running (she has completed two
Chicago Marathons and is hopefully going for her third this
fall), in-line skating the poetry of Wendell Barry and Asian
cooking. She is currently writing her great orchestral
masterpiece and plans to be the next Beethoven.
